Basic Lip Scrub Recipe

What is a lip scrub? Have you ever wondered who came up with this idea or why? Well I’m not sure who created the first lip scrub but I am thankful they did.

A lip scrub is an exfoliating product designed specifically for removing dead skin cells from the sensitive lip area. When the skin on the lips becomes excessively dry, it tends to flake, peel or chap. This is where the lip scrub comes in.

A lip scrub helps to exfoliate the area, bringing the new, soft skin to the surface. It moisturizes while it exfoliates. Another bonus to using a lip scrub is that it can enhance the staying power of your cosmetics such as lip liner, lip gloss and lipstick.

There are many over-the-counter options readily available but I tend to stay away from the chemicals. Besides, it’s so easy to make your own with a few simple ingredients such as honey, sugar and oil. Oh, and a cute lip scrub container to store your recipe in. Of course you can add additional ingredients to the basic recipe such as essential oils for aroma, flavor, and additional skin nourishing benefits so let me share a few fun ideas with you.

Here is the basic recipe:

Capture

  • 3 Tbsp. sugar (can be brown or white) – sugar makes a wonderful exfoliator that is gentler on the skin compared to salt.
  •  1 Tbsp. olive oil (or oil of choice) – a fatty oil like olive oil will provide needed moisture for the lip.
  •  1 Tbsp. honey – known to moisturize and heal dry, cracked lips

Mix together the olive oil and honey, then add in the sugar. Stir until you have a thick consistency and then add to your lip container with airtight lid.

Lip Scrubs by the Season: Using Essential Oils

So after a  while, you may find that you’d like to jazz up your homemade lip scrub. This is where essential oils come in! Depending on the season, or mood that you’re in, you can add essential oils to the recipe to give it a little fun boost.

Spring: Try some skin nourishing floral essential oils such as lavender, geranium, ylang ylang, jasmine, rose, etc…there are plenty of other floral options to choose from as well.

Summer: Summertime makes me thing of citrus. Consider essential oils of lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange, etc…even consider mixing them up to create a blend of your own.

Fall: Cinnamon bark, nutmeg, ginger, clove, come to mind to name just a few.

Winter: Add a little peppermint, wintergreen, pine, spruce, cinnamon, you name it.

The possibilites are endless when it comes to whipping up your own lip scrub. You can even add pumpkin spice or pure vanilla to the recipe. Play around with it, and most of all have fun! As long as you have the basic ingredients, you have all that you need to get started.

—> Just an FYI on essential oils though. They aren’t all created equal and I do not recommend putting just any brand on your lips. I would hate to see a reaction take place so please trust and know the brand that you are using. Young Living is the only company I trust with my family. You can read more about this company here, along with their Sources, Science and Standards, their global farms and more.  <—

fall-facebook-header

I absolutely LOVE this time of the year! The crisp, cool air, sweatshirts in the evenings, harvesting from the garden, the scents of cinnamon and clove coming from the oven as my zucchini bread bakes, the list goes on and on.  I also LOVE diffusing essential oils that can make the entire home smell of this wonderful season!

When I think of the aroma’s of autumn things like cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and orange come to mind…it’s all so warm, welcoming and wonderful! But did you know that when diffusing essential oils, the family and guests are benefiting from SO much more than an amazing aroma in the atmosphere?  Essential oils offer much more than a simple scent to a room. They are known for cleansing and purifying the air.  And when breathed in, they offer many wonderful health benefits.

Let’s take a look at some of the awesome reasons why one would consider essential oils in the home.
