Ditch ‘n Switch – Take the Challenge!

thinkdirty

Have you heard of the Think Dirty app? Let me tell you, this a total game changer when wanting to know what is in our home! I downloaded this app and walked around my home scanning everything with a barcode…cleaning supplies, personal care products, you name it. I think some of the most surprising items to scan high on the hormone distruptor, carcinogenic and allergenic ratings were the items listed as “natural.” It was an eye opener for myself AND for our children. We took this app with us to the store and began scanning products that we were using regularly and opted not to buy them. Did I mention that some of the natural products scored high on the “dirty” list? Seriously, mind blown!

I encourage you to download this app. I challenge you to scan 3 of your cleaning products and personal care products to see how healthy they are. If you are as surprised as I was, let me tell you there IS a better way with healthier alternatives. You can take a deep breath in and let it out slowly knowing it’s going to be okay. Let me show you how you can make the switch.

Home Remedy: Cough Syrup

Home Remedy-Cough Syrup

With the back and forth of our weather and the sudden onset of cold  today, I figured it was time to whip up a batch of cough syrup to be ready.  What I love about this cough syrup is that it is tasty and soothing at the same time.  It’s also versatile, meaning that I can serve by the teaspoon or in a cup of hot water to drink as a tea.

The following ingredients are what I use in this recipe:

  • organic honey
  • lemon juice
  • cayenne pepper
  • glass jar with lid
  • Young Living’s clove essential oil or Thieves essential oil (optional)
  • see below post for health benefits of each ingredients

Directions: I filled the jar 3/4 full with honey and 1/4 full of lemon juice.  Gently stirred to mix. When I was finished mixing, I added a dash of cayenne pepper and stirred again.  (Optional: Add 2-3 drops clove essential oil and stir again).

I like to serve this directly by the teaspoon, or add to a cup of hot water and sip on as a tea as often as needed.  Here is a list of the ingredients and their health benefits, if interested.

When not in use, I store in the refrigerator.

HONEY: Is reported to be as effective – if not more than – over the counter cough syrups.

LEMON: Is said to help loosen congestion and prevent dehydration. Adding to honey it suppose to help thin mucous, soothe a sore throat, and help colds and flu to be more bearable.

CAYENNE PEPPER: The capsaicin in cayenne pepper is said to offer pain-relieving properties.

CLOVE ESSENTIAL OIL: Is said to help assist in soothing sore throats and has a cinnamon flavor that my children find pleasant tasting.
