More Precious Than Gold

All throughout scripture we see mention of oils, resins, spices, plants, trees and herbs. We read about how they were used for purifying, healing, cleansing, aromatherapy, precious ointment and more. Ancient civilizations understood the healing properties and benefits of these natural resources, for centuries…

How did it come to be that we have somehow lost this valuable information along the way?

Essential oils are that aromatic, volatile liquid that is within many shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds and that is usually extracted through steam distillation.  They are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs.

The ancient Egyptians collected essential oils and carefully stored them in alabaster vessels.  These vessels were specially carved and shaped for “housing” scented oils.  They recorded their use of blending oils in their hieroglyphics on the walls of their temples.  An example of this is in the Temple of Edfu, located on the west bank of the Nile River.  There was a small room called a laboratory where perfumes and ointments were compounded. On the walls were many recipes for aromatic perfumes and essential oil  blends.

Some 50 alabaster jars designed to hold 350 liters of oils were discovered in 1922 when King Tutankhamen’s tomb was opened. Tomb robbers had stolen the majority of the precious oils, only leaving behind the heavy jars that still contained a trace of oil.

The robbers literally CHOSE oils over a king’s wealth in gold.  Showing how valuable the essential oils were to them.

Today, we are re-discovering how valuable essential oils are, the healing properties they provide.  We can have all the fine jewels and metals in the world, BUT…

even the temple robbers understood that health is far more precious than gold.
