Homemade Hand
Sanitizer

The wonderful thing about homemade hand sanitizer is that you know every single ingredient that makes up this germ busting concoction
It’s not filled with chemicals, added preservatives or other “fragrances” which basically means more chemicals.
Why Hand Sanitizer? What about soap and water?
Soap and water is the absolute best source for keeping germs at bay and for preventing illnesses to pass from person to person. But what if you are out hiking, or want a quick protection barrier between your hands and the grocery cart handle that hundreds of others have touched prior to yours? That’s when hand sanitizer comes in nicely. You open your purse or pull it out of your jacket pocket, put some on and your good to go.
Facts about Hand Sanitizer
Hand sanitizer is one of those products where less is more. Not only does this mean using less in quantity, but it also means not so frequently either. Hand sanitizer was originally designed for use in the medical field, those dealing with illness on an everyday, 8 hours a day, at the least, kind of schedule. It helped them from carrying germs from one patient to the next. It was never intended to come outdoors of the medical field and into our homes.
Frequent use of hand sanitizer not only kills the germs on your hands but also the good bacteria on our skin (yes we have bacteria on our skin) that helps to prevent foreign invaders from entering our bodies through the pores of our skin. When we remove this protective barrier, we open ourselves up to more harm than good. A lot of skin conditions that occur on our hands are because of the excessive use of hand sanitizer.
Germs are not our enemies, our bodies need to be exposed to them to continue to help us build our immune defenses. Frequent use of chemically concocted hand sanitizers can hinder this process. Especially in our children, when used as often as it’s used.
Let me just stress that after every meal, every trip to the bathroom and everything in between is not the idea here with hand sanitizer. It is for those moments when hot water and soap is unavailable. Always make hot water and soap your first option for illness prevention, hand sanitizer last. Having said that, here is a homemade hand sanitizer that uses ingredients in the right combination to kill germs yet leave your skin in a healthy state by eliminating the harmful chemicals found in the otc alternative. Be blessed.
Homemade Hand Sanitizer Recipe
Ingredients are as follows:
- 1/4 cup aloe vera gel
- 3/4 cup rubbing alcohol or Vodka
- 1/8 cup vegetable glycerin (this is optional, if you prefer you may replace with 1/8 cup more of aloe vera gel)
- 10 drops essential oil (I used Thieves, see below for more options)
Directions: mix all into a food processor and mix for about 2 minutes. This will allow the essential oil to evenly disperse as the alcohol and aloe blend together. It will be the consistency of a thin gel. Pour into bottles and you’re ready to go! (Spray bottles work well as do lotion bottles).
I was able to fill 3 small bottles with this batch.
