Home Remedy-Cough Syrup

~ Tanya Patterson ~

With the back and forth of our weather and the sudden onset of cold  today, I figured it was time to whip up a batch of cough syrup to be ready.  What I love about this cough syrup is that it’s natural ingredients with healing benefits and no side effects.  It’s also versatile, meaning you can serve by the teaspoon or in a cup of hot water to drink as a tea.

You will need the following ingredients:

  • organic honey
  • lemon juice
  • cayenne pepper
  • glass jar with lid
  • clove essential oil or Thieves essential oil (optional)
  • see below post for health benefits of each ingredients

Directions: Fill the jar 3/4 full with honey and 1/4 full of lemon juice.  Gently stir to mix. When finished mixing, add a dash of cayenne pepper and stir again.  (Optional: Add 2-3 drops clove essential oil and stir again).

Serve directly by the teaspoon, or add to a cup of hot water and sip on as a tea as often as needed.  Here is a list of the ingredients and their health benefits.

Store in refrigerator when not in use.

HONEY: Is reported to be as effective – if not more than – over the counter cough medications.

LEMON: Helps loosen congestion and prevent dehydration. Adding to honey it helps to thin mucous, soothe a sore throat and helps colds and flus to be more bearable.

CAYENNE PEPPER: The capsaicin in cayenne pepper offers pain-relieving properties.

CLOVE ESSENTIAL OIL: Assists in soothing sore throats and has a cinnamon flavor that children find pleasant tasting.
